April 18-19, 2006 Creating a Path to Improved K-12 Science and Math Literacy
ORCAS organized a two-day workshop on April 18-19 on K-12 science and math education. The workshop focused attention on the findings and recommendations of the National Academies' report, Rising Above the Gathering Storm, and considered actions that are consistent with emerging legislation as outlined in the Protecting America's Competitive Edge and the Energy Policy Acts. The workshop convened panels of participants drawn from all elements of the K-12 community to examine a number of successful science and math programs and asked:
- What works in science and math education?
- What common elements contribute to science and math learning?
- What are the major barriers to replicating successful programs?
- How do we scale up the most promising programs to benefit other communities?
We will develop a resource document to assist in defining the key components necessary for building successful science and math programs. Visit the workshop page for additional information.
March 7-8, 2006 Workshop on the Globalization of the University and Deemed Export Policy
In conjunction with the ORAU Annual Meeting of Sponsoring Institutions, ORCAS hosted a workshop on the globalization of the university system, with a focus on deemed export controls. As business and technology interests become integrated across the globe, so too are universities. Government regulation of foreign students and campuses abroad are becoming a fact of life for universities. The regulatory burden of deemed exports, which may become more encompassing, and the management of foreign students’ visas may be just the tip of the iceberg as national security efforts increase on campus. To address these issues, ORCAS utilized this timely gathering of concerned stakeholders to examine the export control system and the possible increase in the compliance burden for research universities; the globalization of American universities; and the efficacy of the current export control system, possible alternative approaches, and the use of export controls and universities in national security strategy.

October 3-4, 2005 Regional Assessment of Climate Change Vulnerabilities
ORCAS organized a workshop that evaluated the state of the science of regional climate change impact assessment in the United States and its applicability for decision support at a regional and local scale, using the Southeast United States as a case study.
July 20-21, 2005 Assessing Environmental Health and Ecosystem Function Using Molecular Tools
This ORCAS workshop engaged researchers from varied backgrounds in a discussion of development of molecular tools for use in ecological settings.
